How to Format Content So Both Google and AI Cite It

AI Overviews are cutting clicks by more than half on top-ranking pages. The pages that still get chosen share a handful of structural habits. Here's what they are.

You published something good. It ranks. Then you check your analytics and half the clicks you used to get just aren't there anymore.

You're not imagining it. Google's AI Overviews now show up on roughly 48% of tracked queries, and a Writer study found they cut click-through rates by up to 58% on pages that would otherwise sit at the top of the results. The traffic didn't vanish. It got answered before anyone reached your page.

Here's the part that should change how you write: visitors who do click through from an AI answer convert at about 3x the rate of a normal search visitor. Fewer clicks, better clicks. Which means the game isn't "rank higher" anymore. It's "get chosen as the source."

Ranking and getting cited are two different things

AI tools don't just read the top of Google and repeat it. Research on AI Mode citations found only about 35% overlap between Google's top 10 results and the pages an AI answer actually cites.

That gap is the opportunity. You can sit on page two of Google and still be the page ChatGPT or Perplexity quotes, if your content is built to be pulled apart and reused. We've written about how the retrieval step behind that actually works — the short version is that AI answers retrieve live pages and cite whichever one answers the question most directly, not whichever one ranks first.

What a citation-ready page looks like

Human readers and AI models don't read the same way. A person scans for a heading that matches their question. A model looks for a self-contained chunk of text it can lift and quote without losing meaning.

The pages that satisfy both share the same structural habits:

Element Why it matters for AI citations Why it matters for human readers
Direct-answer opening Gives the model a clean sentence to quote Tells the reader in 5 seconds if they're in the right place
Descriptive H2/H3s phrased as questions Matches how models chunk and retrieve content Lets scanners jump straight to their section
Original numbers and data Nothing to cite if every fact is borrowed Builds trust that you actually know the space
Short, self-contained paragraphs Each paragraph can stand alone as a quotable passage Easier to read on a phone
Structured data (FAQPage, Article schema) Tells crawlers exactly what the content means Invisible to visitors, no downside

Notice what's missing from that list: keyword density. Nobody's counting how many times you said "SEO." They're counting whether you answered the question.

The technical baseline still isn't optional

None of the formatting above matters if a crawler can't reach the page in the first place. Core Web Vitals, mobile rendering, and clean crawlability are still the floor, not a bonus. We cover the specific fixes that move the needle here.

What stopped working

A few tactics quietly died over the last two years:

  • Keyword stuffing — models and search engines both evaluate meaning now, not word count.
  • Thin content built to rank a keyword with nothing new to say.
  • Buying links instead of earning them.
  • Chasing every algorithm update instead of building something genuinely useful.

Google's own Search Essentials guide is blunt about this: helpful content and technical competence, full stop. That's the whole game now, whether the reader is a person or a model.

Four steps to make your content dual-purpose

  1. Audit what's already ranking. Find pages with decent traffic but no AI citations — they're usually missing a direct-answer opening or structured data.
  2. Rewrite the first two sentences of each section so they'd make sense quoted on their own, out of context.
  3. Add one original data point per page. A number from your own work, your own customers, or your own testing. Borrowed stats don't get cited twice.
  4. Track citations, not just rankings. Lookelo's AI search visibility service tracks which prompts mention your business and which pages get pulled into the answer.

Formatting for AI citations isn't a separate skill from good SEO. It's the same discipline — answer the real question, back it up with something original, structure it so it's easy to lift — pointed at a slightly wider audience.
