10 Signals That Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT in 2026

The 10 signals ChatGPT uses to recommend businesses, backed by real provider report data.

A few weeks ago, a prospect typed "data consulting firm Power BI Dallas" into ChatGPT. Our client got the meeting. Not because they paid for placement. Not because they had a clever SEO trick. ChatGPT named them, the prospect reached out, and the deal moved forward.

That's the new front door. And most businesses don't even know it exists.

ChatGPT crossed 800 million weekly active users in late 2025. Google's AI Overviews passed 2 billion monthly users by mid-2025. Perplexity handles over 100 million queries a week. Your next customer is inside one of these tools right now, asking who to hire, what to buy, or where to go.

The question is whether your name comes up.

I pulled data from a real provider report — a tool that tracks which brands ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and other AI engines cite across thousands of queries. The report confirmed something that should reframe how you think about AI visibility: ChatGPT doesn't recommend businesses from their own websites. It recommends them from everywhere else.

Here are the 10 signals that actually make the difference.

1. Let the Right Crawlers Reach Your Site

This is step zero. If AI crawlers can't read your site, nothing else matters.

ChatGPT uses three main bots. OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT Search. ChatGPT-User handles live page fetches when a user asks for current information. GPTBot is for training data. Most sites accidentally block all three.

Check your robots.txt file right now. You want:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /

If you're concerned about content licensing, you can block GPTBot while keeping the search crawlers open. But blocking all of them means you don't exist to ChatGPT, period.

One audit of independent business sites found that a majority were blocking at least one of these bots — usually because of a blanket "block all AI" rule added in 2023 and never revisited. Fix it before anything else.

2. Get Into Bing's Index

ChatGPT doesn't have its own web index. It leans heavily on Bing for live search queries.

If your site isn't in Bing, ChatGPT can't find you when it searches the web. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your XML sitemap, and check that your pages are getting indexed. This is free and takes 20 minutes.

While you're there, look at Bing's crawl reports. Pages that throw errors or return soft 404s aren't just invisible to Bing — they're invisible to ChatGPT too.

3. Add Schema Markup Your Competitors Skip

Structured data gives AI models facts they can parse directly, without guessing.

Most businesses stop at basic schema. The ones getting cited by ChatGPT go further. They use:

  • LocalBusiness schema with exact hours, payment methods, and service areas
  • Organization schema with founder names, founding dates, and sameAs links to social profiles
  • Service schema with price ranges and service descriptions
  • FAQPage schema on every service page, not just the homepage

AI engines read JSON-LD directly. When your schema says "We serve Dallas, Fort Worth, and Plano" and your competitor's says "We serve the DFW area," ChatGPT picks the one it can verify.

Lookelo's GEO audit tool checks your schema against what AI models actually parse. Most sites fail on the first scan — not because they have no schema, but because it's incomplete or contradictory.

4. Make Your NAP Identical Everywhere

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. It sounds boring. It's the single most common reason businesses get skipped.

ChatGPT cross-references your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Maps, LinkedIn, and every directory it can find. If your phone number has a different format on two platforms, or your address uses "Suite" on one and "#" on another, the model loses confidence. And when confidence drops, you don't get recommended.

Pull your business details from every platform you're on. Make them identical — down to the punctuation. Then set a calendar reminder to check quarterly.

5. Fill Every Field in Your Google Business Profile

The provider report I analyzed showed something striking: when ChatGPT recommends local businesses, it pulls heavily from Google Business Profile data. The businesses that got cited had complete profiles — every category, every hour, photos, service descriptions, Q&A responses.

An incomplete profile signals low quality to language models. A complete one signals you're a real, active business worth recommending.

Specific things that matter more than you'd think:

  • Primary and secondary categories. ChatGPT uses these to match you to queries. "Restaurant" isn't enough. "Italian Restaurant" + "Wine Bar" + "Event Venue" is.
  • Photos updated within 90 days. ChatGPT treats stale photos as a signal the business might be inactive.
  • Responding to reviews. Every response is a fresh signal of activity.

6. Build a Review Footprint Across Multiple Platforms

ChatGPT cites third-party reviews relentlessly. One analysis found that for brand-specific questions, 57% of AI citations go to reviews and social proof — not the brand's own website.

The platforms that matter most, based on the provider report data:

  • Google Reviews — the primary source for local recommendations
  • Yelp — cited heavily for restaurants, services, and retail
  • Trustpilot — dominant for SaaS and ecommerce
  • G2 and Clutch — the go-to sources for B2B and agency recommendations
  • Industry-specific platforms — Avvo for lawyers, Houzz for contractors, Zocdoc for doctors

But raw star count isn't enough. ChatGPT reads the content of reviews. A review that says "great service" adds nothing. A review that says "they fixed our leaking water heater in under two hours and charged less than the quote" gives ChatGPT exactly what it needs to recommend you for a specific query.

Ask your customers for detailed reviews. Tell them what to mention: the problem they had, the service you provided, the outcome, the location. The specificity is what gets you cited.

7. Get Listed in Listicles and Industry Roundups

Here's a number that should change how you spend your marketing time: listicles capture 21.9% of all AI citations. For commercial queries — "best CRM for small teams," "top plumbers in Austin" — that jumps to 40.9%.

ChatGPT loves roundups. When someone asks "who's the best [your category] in [your city]," it scans for articles that have already done the comparison work. The provider report showed ChatGPT citing BBB directories, local tourism sites, and industry-specific listicles as its primary sources.

What this means for you:

  • Pitch yourself to journalists and bloggers who write "best of" roundups
  • Get listed in your local chamber of commerce directory
  • Make sure you're on industry award lists and trade association directories
  • If you're B2B, get on G2's category pages and Clutch's directory

One listing in a high-authority roundup is worth more than ten directory submissions to low-quality sites.

Need help getting your business into the listicles ChatGPT actually cites? Lookelo's GEO toolkit identifies which roundups are driving AI citations in your industry, so you know exactly where to pitch.

8. Write Content That Answers Real Questions

Most business websites talk about themselves. ChatGPT rewards websites that answer customer questions.

Structure your service pages around the literal questions people type into AI tools:

  • "How much does [service] cost in [city]?"
  • "What's the difference between [service A] and [service B]?"
  • "Who's the best [service] for [specific use case]?"

Put the answer in the first 40-60 words. AI models extract the first clear answer they find — they don't read your whole page and synthesize. If your homepage opens with three paragraphs of brand poetry before saying what you actually do, ChatGPT will skip you.

Use H2s and H3s formatted as questions. Keep answer blocks short and direct. Then add depth below. This structure makes your content extractable while still being useful to human readers.

The businesses that win AI visibility are the ones that treat every service page like a direct answer to a specific question, not a brochure.

9. Earn Mentions on High-Authority Sites

ChatGPT weighs a mention on Reddit, LinkedIn, or a trade publication more heavily than anything you say on your own site. The model is trained to trust third-party validation — and its live search component reinforces that bias.

The provider report data showed ChatGPT citing Reddit threads, LinkedIn posts, and industry forums as sources for recommendations. When a real person on Reddit says "I used [Company X] for my kitchen remodel and they were great," that carries weight.

What to do:

  • Participate genuinely in Reddit communities where your customers ask questions. Don't spam. Answer helpfully and mention your business only when it's the honest answer.
  • Post case studies and client outcomes on LinkedIn, not just company updates.
  • Get quoted in industry publications. One quote in a trade magazine can get cited by AI for years.
  • Encourage your customers to mention you organically on the platforms they already use.

This is the slowest signal to build. But it's also the hardest for competitors to fake.

10. Monitor, Test, and Iterate

You can't optimize what you don't measure. And AI visibility changes fast.

Open a fresh ChatGPT chat and ask the exact questions your customers would ask:

  • "Best [your service] in [your city]"
  • "Who should I use for [your specialty] in [your area]"
  • "What's a good [your category] for [specific need]"

Screenshot the results. Do this monthly. Track whether you appear, whether your description is accurate, and which competitors are showing up instead.

If you're not showing up, work backward: which signal is weakest? Is your Google Business Profile incomplete? Are your reviews thin? Is your schema missing? Are you absent from the listicles ChatGPT is citing?

The businesses that win AI visibility aren't the ones who do one thing perfectly. They're the ones who consistently improve across all ten signals — and keep at it.

How to Pick Your Starting Point

If you're overwhelmed, start here:

  • Local service business (plumber, dentist, roofer, salon): Start with signals 1, 4, 5, and 6. Crawlers, NAP, GBP, and reviews. These four alone will put you ahead of 80% of local competitors.
  • B2B or SaaS company: Start with signals 3, 7, 8, and 9. Schema, listicles, Q&A content, and third-party mentions. Your buyers are typing comparison queries, and ChatGPT is citing roundups and review platforms to answer them.
  • Ecommerce brand: Start with signals 2, 3, 6, and 7. Bing indexing, product schema, review volume, and listicle inclusion. Product recommendation queries are the fastest-growing category in AI search.

No single signal guarantees a recommendation. But together, they make your business the safest, most verifiable answer ChatGPT can give.

FAQ

How long does it take to get recommended by ChatGPT?

Most businesses see initial results in 2-3 months. The full compounding effect — where you appear consistently across multiple query types — takes 6-12 months. The fastest wins come from fixing crawler access and NAP consistency, which can show results in weeks. Review building and third-party mentions take longer.

Can I pay to get recommended by ChatGPT?

No. There is no paid placement, no submission form, and no way to buy your way into ChatGPT's recommendations. The model assembles answers from what it finds on the open web. The only path is being well-documented, well-reviewed, and easy for AI to verify.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?

ChatGPT uses Bing for live web search, not Google. If your site isn't in Bing's index, ChatGPT can't find you when it searches the web. This is why Bing Webmaster Tools matters for AI visibility even if you don't care about Bing traffic.

What's the difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO optimizes for ranking in search engine results pages. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) optimizes for being cited in AI-generated answers. SEO targets keywords and backlinks. GEO targets entity consistency, structured data, third-party validation, and extractable answer formats. They overlap significantly, but GEO requires additional signals that traditional SEO often ignores.

Do I need to block GPTBot to protect my content?

You can block GPTBot (the training crawler) while keeping OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User open. This prevents your content from being used in training data without blocking it from appearing in ChatGPT search results. Many businesses take this approach.

Which review platforms does ChatGPT care about most?

It depends on your industry. Google Reviews dominate for local businesses. G2 and Clutch are the primary sources for B2B and SaaS. Yelp matters for restaurants, retail, and services. Trustpilot is widely cited for ecommerce. The key is having reviews on the platforms your specific customers use — not spreading thin across every platform.

Will ChatGPT replace Google for business searches?

Not entirely, but the shift is real. Gartner predicts a 25% decline in traditional search volume by 2026. More importantly, the users who switch to AI search tend to have higher purchase intent. Adobe found AI-referred visitors convert at 54% higher rates than traditional search traffic in US retail.
