Does SEO Still Work in the Age of AI?
Yes, but it changed shape. Here's what still matters, what stopped mattering, and how SEO and AI search visibility fit together.
Short answer: yes. SEO still works. But if you're asking the question, you've noticed something real: the results page you optimized for five years ago doesn't exist anymore.
What actually changed?
Two things.
First, Google answers more questions itself. AI Overviews sit above the results and resolve many searches without a single click. Ranking #4 for an informational query is worth less than it used to be, because the searcher may never scroll past the answer.
Second, a growing share of "searches" never touch Google. People ask ChatGPT or Perplexity directly, in longer and more conversational language, and act on the recommendation they get back.
Neither change killed SEO. Both changed what it's for.
What still matters?
More than you'd think:
- Commercial intent still clicks. Someone ready to buy still visits websites, compares options, and fills out forms. Ranking for those searches still pays.
- The fundamentals feed both machines. A fast site, clear pages, structured data, consistent business information: search engines and AI assistants read the same signals. Good SEO is the entry ticket to AI visibility, not a competing budget line.
- Genuinely useful content gets cited. AI answers quote sources. Pages that answer a question directly, with specifics, are exactly what gets quoted, and exactly what Google has said it rewards since long before AI Overviews existed.
What stopped mattering?
The tricks. Keyword-stuffed pages, thin content published at scale, link schemes. Everything that treated ranking as a game separate from being useful. Google's spam policies now explicitly target scaled low-value content, and AI assistants simply ignore sources they can't trust. If your SEO strategy was volume, it was already dying; AI just finished the job.
So what should a small business actually do?
Treat search and AI visibility as one program:
- Fix the technical foundation: speed, mobile, crawlability.
- Write pages that answer the questions your customers really ask, one clear answer per page.
- Keep your business information consistent everywhere it appears.
- Add structured data so machines can read what humans see.
- Measure honestly: Search Console for search, prompt monitoring for AI mentions, and a baseline before you judge anything.
That list isn't secret knowledge. It is just work, done in the right order, month after month.
