Lookelo hardware shopping question review Reviewed: October 13, 2026 Article: /blog/what-hardware-shoppers-need-from-product-pages Purpose Identify recurring information needs in public product-choice questions that could inform an independent hardware or paint retailer's product pages. This is original desk research: Lookelo selected, paraphrased and coded the questions. We did not interview shoppers, inspect their purchases, test AI recommendations, or audit the completeness of retailers' actual product pages. Sample and selection Sixteen distinct original Reddit posts published from January 1 through October 5, 2026. We deliberately selected four readable product-choice questions in each of four categories: drills, exterior paint, deck stain, and fasteners. Selection was a curated convenience sample from indexed search results, not a random sample or an exhaustive collection of first results. Category balance was chosen for relevance to Lookelo's retailer audience, not to represent market share. We did not select or rank posts by votes, replies or popularity. The fastener group includes replacement and mounting screws, not only wood screws. Exclude old original posts even if recent comments made them appear in 2026 searches; removed or image-only posts without enough readable question text; advertising, industry newsletters and news recaps; and general repair instructions with no product-choice question. The search tool returned complete indexed original-post bodies and original-date labels for all included records, alongside comments. Coding uses only the original question, never comments. These were full post bodies rather than short search snippets. Direct web pages were also opened for R02-R04. A direct open of R01 failed, so its evidence is the complete indexed post, not a fresh direct-page verification. We did not infer missing information from images. Sources may change or disappear; dates and retrieval status are preserved in the CSV. Unit and deduplication One original post is one observation. Deduplicate by Reddit post ID. A post may receive several themes, but contributes at most one count to each theme. We did not establish that different accounts correspond to different people. Usernames and full comment threads are not republished. Codebook, applied by one researcher after discovery project_fit: The original question specifies a task, material, exposure, required dimension, or desired project result that influences product choice. A generic request for a good brand without this context does not qualify. compatibility: The question explicitly concerns an existing part, equipment platform or coating, substitution between product types, or pairing mating components. Simply naming a wood surface does not qualify. appearance: An explicit request or concern about color, sheen, transparency, undertones or visible finish. longevity: An explicit concern about reliability, lifespan, peeling/cracking over time, durability or recurring maintenance. Heat or sun exposure alone is coded as project fit, not automatically longevity. budget_value: An explicit budget, price comparison, discount/deal, or question about paying more and whether it is worth it. The title phrase "own money" alone does not qualify. preparation_extras: A request about preparation or application steps/tools, required included components, a missing component in a purchased pack, or necessary companion parts. Existing preparation mentioned solely as background is not enough. 0 means not explicitly present in the readable original question under these rules; it does not mean the shopper has no such concern. Each positive code has a paraphrased evidence note in the CSV. Codes are interpretive and have not undergone independent double coding or an inter-rater reliability check. Calculations Sum the binary column for each theme. For the combined result, count rows with two or more positive themes. Reproduce from docs/research/2026-10-13-shopping-questions/observations.json with calculate.py. The public summary.json contains overall and category counts. Result: project fit 15/16; longevity 7/16; appearance 6/16; compatibility 5/16; budget/value 5/16; preparation/extras 5/16. Thirteen posts contain two or more coded themes. Counts overlap and must not be added as unique shoppers. No confidence intervals or population percentages are offered. Separate context research Read Shopify's January 11, 2026 UCP announcement thread directly on X in Chrome, including a reply asking about shopping context and its effect on sales. Also inspected the "agentic commerce" search for September 13 through October 13, 2026 in Top and Latest views; the visible recent results were largely promotion, payments/crypto commentary or industry posts and were excluded from shopper counts. The X API was not connected through the Composio CLI; indexed X retrieval failed on the original announcement, while the signed-in browser could read it. No social messages were sent. Read a May 14 Shopify Community question about confirming product visibility. Reviewed current Shopify product-discovery documentation, recent October news, and the ReFiBuy/Clickstream study announcement. These have different roles: questions are evidence of expressed uncertainty, platform documentation supports current technical descriptions, and news/studies provide context. None enters the 16-post denominator. Context source links and dates are in source-notes.html. Limits and interpretation These counts describe the selected questions only. They are Reddit-only, international, category-balanced, search-selected and interpreted by one coder. They do not estimate all shoppers, New England shoppers, search volume, brand quality, or the relative size of product categories. They do not establish an increase over time, a gap on any actual retailer website, AI ranking effects, or conversion uplift. The proposed page checklist is Lookelo's editorial inference from the recurring needs, not a tested intervention. Disclosure Lookelo sells website, content and search services. The article's ten-product pilot and example copy are proposed workflows, not a completed client study. The editorial cover is generated illustration, not a client photograph. Manufacturer specifications and instructions should be checked for the exact SKU before using the example fields.
